IIUM MATHEMATICS COMPETITION

The IIUM Mathematics Competition (IMC) is an annual event organised by the Department of Computational and Theoretical Sciences in Kulliyyah of Science at the International Islamic University Malaysia, Kuantan Campus.

This competition is an intended mathematics competition for secondary school students, in particular Forms 4 and 5, which covers the topics of number theory, algebra, the product of irreducible polynomials,  combinatorics and geometry, excluding calculus and complex numbers.

Through this competition, we hope to promote the beauty of mathematics and mathematical thinking as well as the importance of  science itself to the younger generation. Also, this competition will introduce the courses offered in our department to the public in general.

HISTORY

The Department of Computational and Theoretical Sciences  (CTS), Kulliyyah of Science (KOS) has organized IIUM Mathematics Competition (IMC) since 2005. The event is opened to secondary school students, from form 4 to form 5 (participation from form 2 and form 3 must be under recommendation from the teacher).

The first competition in 2005 was held in IIUM main campus, Gombak where more than 100 students from 20 secondary schools in Kuala Lumpur participated in this competition.

After the Kulliyyah of Science moved to Kuantan campus at the end of 2006, the Department of CTS once again organized the IMC in 2007 where this time they invited more than 20 secondary schools from Kuantan area. This marked the opening of this program in our new CTS home.

In the year 2008, this program has been expanded to the whole Pahang state. More than 50 selected students accompanied by their teachers came to Kulliyyah of Science and participated in this event.

Later, in 2009, due to the increasing interest to this event, a preliminary round was introduced to widen the opportunity of participation among the intent students.  More than 1500 students took the test for this qualifying round.

In the years 2012 – 2014, this event was co-organized with Jabatan Pelajaran Negeri (JPN) Pahang and was also partially sponsored by Persatuan Sains Matematik Malaysia (PERSAMA) and Yayasan Pahang.

In Malaysia, only a handful of mathematically capable students choose mathematics in local universities. This could be due to the lack of promotions on mathematics programme to the public. Therefore, this competition hopes to attract more students to further their interest in this area.

FROM 2015

Starting 2015, in addition to schools in Pahang state, we had opened the IMC participation to three (3) other states in Malaysia that are Terengganu, Kelantan, and Johor. Jabatan Pelajaran Pahang has also co-organized this event.

AS NATIONAL LEVEL

In 2016, Ministry of Education agreed to give a national certificate for students who qualify to the Final Round. For IMC 2019, the invitation of participation has been extended to two other states in Malaysia which are Melaka and Negeri Sembilan. The participation is now involves six (6) states – Pahang, Terengganu, Kelantan, Johor, Melaka and Negeri Sembilan.

CANCELLATION OF IMC 2020

For the year 2020, the competition was initially planned to be held in June (preliminary) and September (final) but unfortunately, due to the pandemic COVID-19, we have decided to cancel the competition.

Thus in 2021, we strive to bring back the event with a better plan and new arrangement to accommodate the current situation.
