Introduction

The Department of Computational and Theorectical Science  (CTS) , Kulliyyah of Science ( KoS ) has organized IIUM Mathematics Competitions (IMC) since 2005.

In Malaysia, only a handful of mathematically capable students choose mathematics in local universities. This could be due to lack of promotions on mathematics programme to the public. Therefore, this competition hopes to attract talented students from 4 states; Pahang, Johor, Terengganu and Kelantan of secondary schools to join the Department of Computational and Theoretical Sciences (CTS), IIUM. The event is opened to secondary school students, from form 4 to form 5 (participation from form 2 and form 3 must be under recommendation from the teacher).

The first IIUM Mathematics Competition in 2005 was held in IIUM main campus, Gombak. More than 100 students from 20 secondary schools in Kuala Lumpur participated in this competition.

After Kulliyyah of Science has moved to Kuantan end of 2006, the Department of Computational and Theorectical Science (CTS) once again organized the IMC in 2007 and invited more than 20 secondary schools from Kuantan town.

In the year 2008, CTS expanded the events to whole Pahang state. More than 50 selected students accompanied by their teachers from whole Pahang state came to Kulliyyah of Science and participated in this meaningful event.

In the year 2009, we expanded the event to whole Pahang state secondary schools with preliminary stage, more than 1500 students has taken the test for qualifying round.

In the years 2012, 2013, and 2014,  Jabatan Pelajaran Pahang has co-organized this event and our competition is also partially sponsored by Persatuan Sains Matematik Malaysia (PERSAMA) and Yayasan Pahang.

Starting with year 2015, besides school in Pahang state, we had opened IMC to other states in Malaysia, namely schools in Terengganu, Kelantan, and Johor. In addition, Jabatan Pelajaran Pahang has co-organized this event.

In the year 2016, MOE agreed to give a national certificate for students who qualify to Final Round of IMC 2016.

For IMC 2019, the invitation of participation has been extended to two other states in Malaysia which are Melaka and Negeri Sembilan. The certificate of national level has been given to the final contestant. As this event is getting a wider attention, hopefully, it will be well-managed and well-received by the participants and their school.

For the year 2020, the competition was initially planned to be hold in June (preliminary) and September (final) but unfortunately, due to the pandemic Covid-19, the organiser has decided to cancelled the competition. We understand the students’ priority after months away from the school and we respect their need in fulfiling their academic syllabus and their safety.
